The Grand Theft Auto fans parties
Different engine, nicer graphics and lots of fun: The new GTA Trilogy from Rockstar Games offers classics with contemporary elements.
Actually, the revised version of GTA 5 for Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X / S should appear on November 11, 2021. That didn't work - but there are replacements. Because on the same day Rockstar Games published a collection with new editions of the first "three-dimensional" Grand Theft Auto: GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition.
GTA 3 was the first such series part, it was released in 2001 and takes place in Liberty City (New York). GTA Vice City followed a year later and is set in a city reminiscent of Miami. GTA San Andreas was launched in 2004. The location was primarily Los Santos, the fictional counterpart of Los Angeles, which is located in the fictional state of San Andreas.
The three games are separate programs that we can download individually. There is a separate trophy list for each. A comparison of the file sizes for the PS5 version also gives an impression of the respective size: GTA 3 requires around 5.44 GB, GTA Vice City is 11.31 GB and GTA San Andreas is 22.97 GB.
The games have almost doubled with each episode - which is not only recognizable from the file size, but also from the overview map that has grown comparably with the respective episode.
However, there are similarities: All of them are no longer based on the original runtime environment, but on the Unreal Engine. The options menu is always the same - if we haven't overlooked a detail, this really applies to the last sub-item.
All three games are controlled in exactly the same way, like GTA 5. This means that in the console version, for example, we use the triggers to accelerate and brake our car; with us it just felt right from the first moment. Alternatively, we can also select the classic controls (which, incidentally, are discreetly reminiscent of Red Dead Redemption 2 in parts).
At San Andreas, this system is initially used as long as we are on the bike. As soon as we sit in a car, however, we have the controls we are used to from GTA 5 again. Important: All three have the now familiar navigation line with which we are guided to the next location.
The graphics have been revised in all three games. In the trailers from Rockstar Games you can see where the differences are. There is no option to choose the original look in the new editions.
Despite the same technology and options: The character of the original graphic can also be seen in the Definitive Edition. GTA 3, for example, doesn't look like a current game at all, but looks extremely poor in detail for today's viewing habits - you shouldn't start with the wrong expectations.
There are visible improvements in the field of vision, textures and the lighting system, among other things. The latter, however, does not prevent some areas from being too heavily shaded, especially in San Andreas, so that little can be seen in some cutscenes. There are also improvements in environmental effects such as water and weather, and trees have a little more detail.
All games have the original soundtrack and English voice overs with subtitles. Especially with GTA 3, the voice mix is - as in the original - very strange, the voices are sometimes barely audible.
All games do not offer the continuous soundscape that we are used to nowadays, but sometimes silence for minutes in cutscenes, which feels strange. Some songs are missing from the radio stations, which is hardly noticeable.
The most important playful change is the already mentioned full support of a navigation line when driving a car. In addition, there are now revised reset points for the missions: If we die, which can happen quickly in view of the high level of difficulty, we can repeat the task immediately without having to go to the scene again.
