Russia blocks Google News

Google News is the latest major service to be banned in Russia. The country's telecom regulator Roskomnadzor has blocked Google News, according to Reuters, which cited a report from state media agency Interfax.

The regulator said that it was blocking the news service because it gave access to numerous publications and materials containing incorrect and important information to the public about the course of the special military operation on the territory of Ukraine,” according to Interfax.

Russia has already banned Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in recent weeks On 26 February 2022.

This decision follows Russian President Vladimir Putin also signed into law new legislation making it illegal to spread "knowingly fake news" about the Russian army's operations in Ukraine, introducing jail terms of up to 15 years.
